Today, Magento has officially announced a new initiative that had me on the edge of my seat as soon as I heard about it: Magento Innovations Lab.
It’s a recognition programme for any project you have ever done that is ahead of the curve. Anything that demonstrates how Magento 2 can be employed as the basis to lead to way to new ways of commerce.
This is a chance for you to present your side project. It can be very customized solution for one specific use case or a general approach which is not yet commercialised but somewhere in an alpha or beta stage or in one production instance.
Built something awesome at a hackathon? Let it be known! Created something mindblowing that is a bit too mindblowing for your regular clients? Test our minds!

It’s all about the frontend

Dear backend developers, you need to be brave now: Magento Innovations Lab only recognizes those projects which are visible in the frontend of your store. Creations that drive revenue or take user experience to the next level is what Magento Innovations Lab wants to highlight.
Any use of rising technologies is more than welcome – virtual reality, internet of things, chatbots, whatever you prefer.

What are the benefits of Magento Innovations Lab?

Well, for you, dear potential master of ingenuity, you receive a ton of honour and glory. Online and offline, your project will be featured.
This is a recurring programme. The first round is open for submissions from today (September 7th) until October 20th, 2017.
Update: The deadline has been extended until November 30 so if your project is not ready yet you have a few more weeks to add some finishing touches!
In this initial round, a maximum of 8 innovators will be selected. If your project is one of these chosen few, it will get its own spot in the Magento Innovations Lab. First, virtually on a special website managed by Magento. And secondly in real life, that is at Imagine 2018 in Las Vegas.

What are the requirements?

There are a bunch of official rules for Magento Innovations Lab. If you can tick off these requirements, you have a good shot at being selected:

  • Built on Magento 2
  • Focus on customer – frontend implementation
  • No vaporware, so either a live demo or production instance available
  • Exclusively on Magento, not on any other platform
  • Not fully productised or commercialised, not a ready to buy extension or SaaS offering

It’s either gold or glory

Magento Innovations Lab is meant to highlight up and coming solutions. Anything that has already been heavily commercialised will be sidelined.

Who can contribute?

This is the best part: anyone! Partner levels, Enterprise licenses, country of origin, preference for coffee or tea – none of these matter. It is a programme that is open to anyone working with the Magento 2 platform.

Show off your invention

So I am very curious to see what kind of experiments people have worked on in other parts of the world or in well hidden offices that have never been in touch with the visible Magento sphere (hackathons, events, Twitter, …) before.

If you want to read more about it, check out the official announcement of Magento Innovations Lab. Or head straight for the submission form and take part in the first round of Innovations Lab.
