FAQ – Frequently Asked Questions

E-Commerce is a complex topic. While browsing our website, you might have a question or two.
Here you can read our answers to some of these questions.

Questions about integer_net

Since when does integer_net exist?

The company was founded in 2012 by Andreas von Studnitz, Christian Philipp, Lisa Buchholz and Viktor Franz. All four had previously worked together in another angency; some of them had worked as freelancers before joining forces.

What does integer_net mean?

“integer” is a German adjective describing a morally impeccable character, coming from “integrity”. Next to incorruptibility, in computer science “integer” is a data type to describe whole numbers. This is the integer we are based on. That’s why the pronunciation is like the English term: ɪntɪdʒə

The suffix _net describes our field of work in the world wide web as well as our position – together with many others, we work in the network of the Magento community.

Where is integer_net located?

Our office is in the German city Aachen (Aken, Aquisgrana, Aquisgrán, Aix-la-Chapelle), which is right at the border to Belgium and Netherlands.

Where can I meet someone of integer_net in person?

We can always meet up for coffee in our office in Aachen. We are also regularily at different Magento meetups, especially Magento-Stammtisch in Aachen, and also at conferences such as Meet Magento DE or MagentoLive EU.

Which languages do you speak at integer_net?

For most of us, German is our mother tongue. English is always an option, too. We also have Dutch, French and Russian native speakers in our team.

Some of our language savvy folks can also speak a few sentences in Italian and Spanish.

Where does the raccoon come from?

The Raccoon is our mascot. As it should be in an e-commerce agency, the Raccoon was ordered online. The exact circumstances are not quite clear anymore. His birthday (delivery date) is November 26, 2014. By now, we are all mad about raccoons which is why we now sponsor a raccoon in the local zoo, the Aachener Tierpark.

Is integer_net a full service agency?

No, we are not. Our biggest strength is Magento development and managing Magento projects.
If other services are required, e.g. hosting or design, we hark back to our network in the Magento world and refer other service providers with whom we have successfully worked before.

How does a project team at integer_net look like?

Depending on the size of the project, several developers for frontend and backend development are involved. A project manager will be the central point of contact for our client and any external project partners, such as the hosting provider. The project manager coordinates requests and makes sure that the project flows smoothly.

Do you also work as a white label partner?

We value openness and transparency as the basis for a good collaboration. integer_net is built on these values, which we want to represent through our work. That’s why we decline jobs as a white label partner.

Can you help us with a little problem in our store?

In general, our team has plenty to do with the continuous maintenance and improvement of our clients’ stores, so we rarely have any free resources available on a short notice.
Since every project, no matter how small the change may be, requires quite some effort to set it up and to get familiar with it, the effort usually pays off if the job requires several days of work.

What do the certifications mean?

Magento offers several certifications as a proof for certain fields of knowledge. As a preparation for these certifications, you can either learn independently or in an official Magento training. In both cases, you can’t do without practical experience with Magento to pass the exam.

These certifications cover different topics and levels of knowledge.

Magento 2 Certified Solution Specialist
Certifications for all who work with Magento and know how to employ the features of the plattform for an e-commerce project.

Magento 2 Certified Professional Developer
Certifications for developers with an extensive understanding of Magento and abilities to change it with simultaneous consideration of Magento standards.

Magento 2 Certfied Professional Front End Developer
Certification for frontend developers with knowledge of CSS, JavaScript, layouts and templates.

Magento 2 Certfied Professional Developer Plus
Certification for senior developers with at least three years experience of customizations in Magento projects.

You can find further information regarding the certifications in an overview we have created.

Questions about integer_net’s work style

Do you work remotely?

Yes, some of us spend a few days per week in their home offices. Anyone who prefers a spatial separation of work and home is welcome to come into our office every day.

Do you only use Magento?

As a basis for e-commerce projects, yes. “Only Magento” contains everything else that is needed to build a store: e.g Docker, Jenkins & Co. for release workflows; React for high-performance frontend development.

Magento is a complex system. If you want to understand it completely – and that is our aim – you don’t have time for another e-commerce software. Since the foundation of the company, Magento is on our daily menu and so far we don’t get tired of it.

Which project management techniques do you use?

We work with agile methods in sprints of two weeks length.

What is the usual course of a project for you?

If we are tasked to work on an existing Magento store built by a third party, then the first step is to do a store analysis.

When the goal and the status quo are determined, we start working in sprints towards the goal. Each sprint offers the possibility to provide feedback and to see whether what we do corresponds to the idea of our client.

Before we launch a project, a final longer test phase takes place. When everything is ready to go, we can launch the project.

And afterwards it continues. We always plan to be ready to help with further optimizations and additions after a project launches.

How long does a project take?

That depends on what needs to be done. Even ballpark numbers can lead to wrong assumptions. We would prefer to give you an individual estimate for your project.

We have our own development team that needs support. Can you help?

That’s great! For these cases we offer Magento trainings to help your team build the know how they need. Those trainings or workshops can be individualized so they fit to your needs exactly. If you are interested in Code Reviews, Mentoring or anything else: Just ask us!

Questions about Magento

What is Magento?

Magento is an e-commerce platform, it’s a software that forms the basis of an online store. We use it as the framework for online stores that we create.

What do the terms Magento, Magento 1, Magento 2, Enterprise, Commerce, Community Edition mean?

Magento usually refers to the company formerly called Magento Inc., which has now been acquired by Adobe and thus changed its name to “Magento, an Adobe Company”.

Magento 1 was published in 2008. It soon gained popularity and was used in many projects in the booming e-commerce era.

Magento 2 is a complete overhaul of Magento 1, published in 2015. A change from one of these platforms to the other isn’t an update, but it’s more fittingly called a migration. While many features have remained the same, the underlying technology has changed radically.

Magento 2 is available as a Commerce or an Open Source version. The first is a paid version, while the latter can be used free of charge but comes with a smaller feature set.
With Magento 1, there are similar distinctions. However, the paid version here is called Enterprise Edition, the free version is the Community Edition.

Which advantages does Magento 2 offer?

Magento 2 is an e-commerce platform. If you plan to create an online store, Magento is a great, reliable basis with many features that can be customized or extended.

A big advantage is the Magento community, which means all agencies, freelancers and merchants that work with Magento. Many of them offer free or affordable solutions to complement your business (e.g. plugins, extensions, templates). Furthermore, a big part of the community actively contributes to improvements of the Magento software core – of course this happens in cooperation with the official Magento team to make sure that quality and integrity of the platform are not compromised. We take part in this too and provide improvements and fixes which are finally added to Magento 2.

But other kinds of contributions apart from code are valuable too: how-to videos, documentation and tips for a fitting configuration are other important puzzle pieces of the Magento community. And let’s not forget the myriad blog posts that offer insights and help for any kind of issue.

Which disadvantages does Magento 2 have?
Magento 2, the complete new software published in 2015, requires quite a lot from from the developers working with it. As a result, the supply of Magento 2 development is lower than that of Magento 1. At the same time, the demand is comparatively high, surged by the official support end of Magento 1. Many merchants want to switch to Magento 2. Following the principles of supply and demand, this can lead to higher costs for development services of Magento 2.
Is it still possible to use Magento 1?

Yes, until June 2020 Magento 1 can still be used as before. After this date, Magento – the company behind the software – no longer officially support Magento 1. Security patches and new features will no longer be made available from the official supplier.

Which options merchants have that are still on Magento 1 has been discussed in our blog.

How much does Magento 2 cost?

While the license fee of Magento 1 has been calculated based on the number of used servers, Magento 2 Commerce license fees are calculated based on revenue. It’s not possible to name a concrete number as the negotiations also consider other factors, for example whether it’s a B2B or a B2C store and how high the rate of returns is. Next to license fees, a Magento 2 store requires hosting and maintenance which will add to the costs.
